This vintage tee promotes AIDS awareness, and features the red awareness ribbon. This shirt was made in the early 90s, shortly after the Red Ribbon Project was created by the New York City-based art organization, Visual AIDS. The Red Ribbon Project was conceived to create a visual signifier that supported people living with HIV/AIDS and their loved ones. The Project was especially important around this time, as AIDS was still a highly stigmatized disease in the 90s. This led to misinformation and discrimination that made it difficult for patients to access proper medical care. Public campaigns that fought against all the negative propaganda became essential to reducing the spread of AIDS and the number of AIDS related deaths.
