This amazing vintage shirt is a rare long sleeve tee that was made to promote the 1988 Japanese animated masterpiece, Akira. To celebrate the debut of this epic science fiction film, The Akira Committee and the manga publisher Kodansha Ltd., partnered with a company called Fashion Victim to produce a line of officially licensed tees for the movie. This awesome shirt has graphics on the front, back, and going down the right sleeve, and it features the character Shotaro Kaneda, with the tag line "Neo-Tokyo is about to explode".
Akira was based on the manga of the same name, written by Katsuhiro Otomo. Although the plot of the movie differs greatly from its source material, Otomo also directed the film and was thus able to match the manga's themes and tone. Since its debut, Akira has proven to be a landmark in not just animation, but cinema in general. It helped to pioneer both the Japanese cyberpunk genre and the adult animation market. Its dedicated cult following paved the way for Japanese media in western culture, and the movie sparked a growing interest in anime, which set the stage for series like Pokemon, Dragon Ball, and Naruto to become cultural phenomenas.
Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the movie tells the story of a rag tag biker gang and the events that unfurl when one of the members, Tetsuo Shima, starts developing telekinetic abilities. The film's storytelling and breathtaking animation forever changed media, as countless creators around the world have cited Akira as having an influence on their work. Metal Gear Solid, Kill Bill, Batman Beyond, Cowboy Bebop, Inception, The Matrix, and Spawn are just a small handful of titles that drew inspiration from Akira.
