The Austin Powers trilogy was both written and produced by its star, Myers, and it was directed by Jay Roach, who is also know for the popular comedy Meet the Parents. Austin Powers was written as a satirical tribute to 1960s spy movies like James Bond and British television shows like Jason King. The franchise was also heavily inspired by Myers' father who had passed away near the beginning of the decade. Myers considered the films to be a tribute to his dad, who was responsible for introducing the actor to influences like Peter Sellers, The Goodies, Peter Cook, and Dudley Moore.
The first Austin Powers film debuted in 1997, and it was followed by two sequels: The Spy Who Shagged Me in 1999 and Austin Powers in Goldmember in 2002. Myers notably played not only the titular hero, but also his arch nemesis Dr. Evil. This wasn't Myers original intention, and the role of Dr. Evil was actually offered to Jim Carrey, but the actor had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts with his film Liar Liar.
