This awesome shirt commemorates the release of Nelson Mandela, a revolutionary anti-apartheid activist who later became the first president of South Africa. During his time working as a lawyer in Johannesburg, Mandela became involved in anti-colonial politics and joined the African National Congress. Determined to overthrow the National Party's apartheid government, Mandela later joined the South African Communist Party and helped found the uMkhonto we Sizwe, who led the sabotage campaign that led to his imprisonment.
Although sentenced to life in prison, Mandela only wound up serving 27 years. Fearing looming threats of a possible racial civil war, Mandela was released by President F.W. de Klerk in 1990, and people across the globe celebrated the newly found freedom of the man who had become the world's most famous political prisoner. Mandela's release signaled the political changes that were on the horizon, and a few short years later Mandela successfully won South Africa's first multiracial general election.
