Pearl Jam formed from the ashes of Seattle based grunge precursor, Mother Love Bone. Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Mike McCready had all played in bands and were all embracing the Seattle sound. They decided to asked Red Hot Chili Peppers' former drummer Jack Irons if he knew any drummers or vocalists in Southern California who might be a good fit for their sound.
