Peter Murphy was the lead singer for the English, goth rock band, Bauhaus until the mid 80s when the band split up. He did a few projects with other English musicians but ultimately found success as a solo artist. With his deep, baritone voice, sharp looks, and dark poetics, Murphy is often affectionately referred to as the "Godfather of Goth."
Deep was released just a few weeks before 1990 and it was Murphy's most popular album in the US. Murphy incorporated the more aggressive, goth rock sound that Bauhaus was known for into this album with much success. The song "Cuts You Up," was Murphy's most popular song off of the album, and Deep peaked on the US Billboard 200 at #44 in 1999.
Murphy went on to release several more studio and live albums. He also moved to Turkey in the 90s and his music began to adopt some influences from Turkish instrumental music. Murphy continued to make live appearances and even cameoed in The Twilight Sage: Eclipse as "The Cold One."
