This cool vintage tee pays homage to a 1993 made-for-TV movie that aired on MTV, which was titled Straight from the Hood: An MTV News Special Report. The documentary aimed to give viewers a look into what it was like to grow up in the communities of South-Central and East Los Angeles, or as its often known colloquially, "the hood". The movie was filmed following the aftermath of the Rodney King verdicts, which shed some light on the struggles that affected these California communities.
MTV was just one of many entertainment media companies that was looking to profile South Central following the 1992 Los Angeles Race Riots. Although, MTV claimed that their popularity among the young African American population made them able to get a better insight than other mainstream news outlets.
Straight From the Hood was directed by Rob Fox, who had previously worked on the MTV reality series The Real World. Fox's intention for the documentary was to move past stereotypes and look into what daily life in the community was really like. Some of the people interviewed included celebrities who grew up in the area such as Ice-T and Boyz N the Hood director John Singleton, as well as Michael Concepcion, a former gang member who had helped to found the Crips street gang.
