This vintage tee was made for anyone who's ever quoted the phrase, "yo quiero Taco Bell". The shirt features Taco Bell's former mascot, Gidget the Chihuahua, and it was made in 1998 to promote the restaurant's new menu item, the Gordita. Throughout the 90s, Gidget starred in numerous commercials as "The Taco Bell Chihuahua". The ads became viral hits that spawned multiple catchphrases, one of them being "Viva Gorditas!"
Taco Bell took a rather interesting approach to promote the Gordita, choosing to base the commercials around the life of the famous Cuban revolutionary, Che Guevara. Ads featured Gidget wearing a beret resembling Guevara's and even depicted the dog addressing a cheering crowd of Gordita revolutionaries. Despite this bizarre marketing strategy, the Gordita was met with a positive reaction, and Gidget's popularity continued. In fact, customers were so smitten with the adorable mascot that for the next two years, Taco Bell sold talking plush figures of the dog.
