This sweet graphic tee commemorates the 1982 Kinetic Sculpture Race in Humboldt County. This unique event has been happening annually in the coastal, northern California county since the late 1960s. Kinetic sculptures are moving works of art and every memorial day weekend, "Kinetinauts" put their sculptures to the test on over 40 miles of land, sand, water and mud. The sculptures have a pilot who steers the sculpture from the inside and a pit crew that follows along for the race.

Kinetic sculpture racing was started by local metal sculptor and eccentric, Hobart Ray, almost by accident. Ray had turned his young son's tricycle into a kinetic sculpture when another artist saw it and challenged him to a race down Main Street. 10 other challengers showed up and, although neither artist ended up winning, the tradition was born.
