This awesome shirt celebrates the iconic sketch comedy series, In Living Color, which aired on Fox throughout the early 90s. The show was known for its irreverent humor, and a cast that showcased black talent in a way that other comedy series from the era failed to do. In Living Color helped to jump start the careers of several notable comedians and actors, including Jamie Foxx, Jim Carrey, and Tommy Davidson. The series was created by Keenon Ivory Wayans, and regularly featured other members of the Wayans family such as Kim, Damon, and Shawn.
This tee highlights one of the show's many popular recurring segments, "Men on..." which was a fake public access show hosted by two opinionated gay men. The sketch starred Damon Wayans as Blaine Edwards and David Alan Grier as Antoine Merriweather, and it involved the pair sharing their opinions on pop culture. This tee includes the catchphrase, "two snaps up!" which was given to signify the duo's approval.
"Men on..." was a polarizing sketch in the 90s. On the one hand, some people found that it stereotyped black gay men as overly effeminate. Meanwhile, others were able to find humor in the characters, who stood out as being the only recurring gay characters to be featured on network television at the time. Grier also later admitted that much of his characterization was based on his experience working on Broadway, with actual gay black men.
