This rad graphic tee is for the skate magazine, Transworld Skateboarding. The magazine was founded in the 80s and it was published monthly. TWS was meant to be an alternative to the popular and edgy Thrasher magazine, which was founded two years prior. At the time, Thrasher was publishing ads with topless women and promoting sex, drugs, and risky behavior. TWS was meant to be a more family-friendly, accessible alternative that highlighted the positive and creative aspects of skateboarding. In 1982, Thrasher introduced the slogan "skate and destroy" which TWS countered with "skate and create."
In the 90s, TWS began producing skate videos. Their first, Uno, had a star-studded cast including the likes of Tony Hawk and Marc Johnson. Their following videos featured a more selective casting process and skaters like Steve Berra, Lance Mountain, and Mark "Gonz" Gonzales all made appearances over the years. TWS ceased publishing physical issues in 2019 but they continued to publish online.
