This cool tee features a graphic for the Presidential Physical Fitness Award. The Presidential Physical Fitness Test was administered to middle and high school students starting in the 1950s. It was built upon the idea that America's youth had gone "soft" and the country needed to establish a reserve of potential, future US soldiers. This t-shirt was part of an award that went to the top performing 85th percentile of test takers. The test has since been criticized for its negative impact on the mental and social health of students, especially kids who weren't particularly athletic or "physically fit" according to the narrow constraints set by the test. It has since been discontinued and federal efforts to physically engage students have shifted to focus more on health than athleticism.
