This awesome shirt comes from the visual effects company Boss Film Studios. The company was founded by Richard Edlund after he departed from Industrial Light and Magic, the studio responsible for providing the effects for the Star Wars franchise. This shirt is dedicated to a different sci fi film, the movie Species directed by New Zealand director Roger Donaldson. The shirt includes an H.R. Giger drawing of the movie's main monster on the sleeve.
Species was science fiction horror film about a female human-alien hybrid named Sil. Donaldson thought that Giger would be perfect for the project based on his work in the Alien films, and Giger was excited by the opportunity to design a creature that was meant to be both sensual and deadly.
Practical effects for the movie were sculpted by Steve Johnson who had previously worked with Giger on Poltergeist II: The Other Side. Johnson's studio XFX took care of the sculpts for the practical effects while Boss Film provided the computer-generated effects. Boss's contribution included one of the earliest forms of motion capture effects. The studio used a two-foot high puppet that had sensors which translated movement to a digital model of Sil. Using these effects the studio was able to achieve in one day, what would have taken maybe three weeks to create using practical effects.
Other movies that employed Boss Film Studios that same year included Outbreak, Waterworld, Heat, and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls.
