This awesome vintage shirt includes one of Susan Greenwood Sweeton's classic illustrations of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy characters. The shirt shows off a drawing of Gandalf the wizard, a major protagonist that is featured in both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In the novels Gandalf acts as a guide figure who helps to direct the other more central protagonists like Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. Tolkien has also been quoted comparing him to the Norse god Odin.
In other media, Gandalf has been portrayed in the BBC Radio dramatizations of the novels and also in the animated films produced in the late 70s and early 80s. When Gandalf appeared in the Peter Jackson film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings, he was famously portrayed by actor Sir Ian McKellen, who is also celebrated for his role as Magneto in the X-Men films. Apparently both Sean Connery and Patrick Stewart turned down the role. Meanwhile McKellen based his interpretation of the character on Tolkien himself, referencing several interview with the author for inspiration.
Fits like a modern unisex adult medium. This shirt is very thin and has spot on the side near the bottom, see pics.
