The club was created in 1978 by Don Zetnick and a few local runners. The shirt features a graphic of penguins, which have come to represent the event, and the back includes a list of various sponsors such as Drs. Alexander Orthodontics, American Airlines, Adventure Tours Vacations, and The Runner, a local activewear shop that was owned by Zetnick's son Phil.
